Inoculate Against The Trust Recession | Episode 24

Why Humanizing Your Brand is the Only Way Forward

In the high-stakes world of leadership, there is a silent killer that most CEOs are ignoring: the “Trust Recession.” I recently sat down for a Hot Seat episode with the branding lady boss herself, Rachel B. Lee, to uncover how leaders can navigate this era of skepticism. Rachel B. isn’t just a LinkedIn Top Voice; she is a visionary at Standout Authority and the founder of YOUmanize™, and she has a lot to say about why your polished corporate mask is actually driving customers away.

Rachel B. Lee didn’t mince words when describing the current landscape. “We are in a ‘Trust Recession.’ Over 70% of people in general do not trust the government or those leading businesses,” she noted. This distrust has led many companies to retreat into safe, conservative messaging. But according to Rachel B., that is the exact opposite of what you should be doing. “I don’t actually agree with that approach. We have to press the edge. We have to stand out and take a stand.”

One of the most striking parts of our conversation was Rachel B. Lee’s take on vulnerability. In a world flooded by AI-generated content, she argues that the only thing people truly crave is a human connection. “I build emotional resonance through vulnerability,” Rachel B. explained. She shared a brilliant illustration of this by choosing to wear Nike sneakers to a networking event instead of uncomfortable heels. It sounds simple, but that small act of authenticity (being the “real deal”) is what builds the “Trust X-Factor.”

Rachel B. also reminded us that branding isn’t about what looks good on a pitch deck; it’s about the real customer experience. She shared a powerful case study about a New Zealand client who wanted a refund. Instead of being defensive, she leaned into a Courageous Conversation. “If you don’t take the time, especially with angry customers, you have no idea what is going on. You’re just building in a vacuum,” she warned. By simply listening, she turned a fracture in trust into a lasting partnership.

As we looked toward the future, we discussed the role of AI. While Rachel B. acknowledges that 80% of marketers are using AI, she maintains that it should never replace the soul of your business. “I actually want to have less people doing more things across the board and having agents, AI agents… then we have a real human interacting with clients,” she said. In her view, the future belongs to those who focus on creativity, consciousness, and the individual voices of their employees.

The message is clear: whether you are a solopreneur or leading a 10,000-person company, your behavior is what builds your trust credit score. As Rachel B. Lee puts it, “The most powerful marketing today is personal branding and focusing on individual voices.”
