…or How Kellee Strople Turned Trauma-Informed Sobriety into a Blueprint for Authentic Leadership and Business Transformation
Hey, amazing friend! Are you ready to peel back the onion on a powerful concept that’s at the very heart of everything we do on The Change Energizer Hot Seat Podcast: the Trust X-Factor.
What is the single most powerful factor separating a good leader from a legendary one? It’s not just expertise: it’s the profound confidence people have in your character and your expertise. When trust is high, people don’t just perform; they pull off legendary Super Bowl wins.
I recently had the privilege of sitting down with Kellee Strople, a truly amazing devotional artist, whose life story is, quite frankly, a stunning, living proof of this principle. Kellee’s journey, through immense personal trauma, a battle with functional alcoholism, a difficult divorce, and a powerful healing journey that birthed her writing ministry, proves that your deepest wounds can become the foundation for your most authentic, trust-building message.
For high-performing leaders, established coaches, and consultants like you, Kellee’s story is more than just an inspiration; it’s a non-traditional, trust-based strategy for generating greater impact and income. I want to take you through the biggest takeaways from our conversation, distilling the key lessons on vulnerability, purpose, and spiritual growth that I believe you can apply to your own life and business right now.
Your Transparency is the Ultimate Trust X-Factor
The cornerstone of my entire podcast is that when trust is high, everything changes. And I saw this immediately with Kellee.
I told her, “What’s really neat about this episode is you are opening your heart, and you’re going to tell us about some things today that you may not always want the whole wide world to know… but your transparency creates trust in our audience and helps them to say, ‘Oh, tell me more.'”
It’s a game-changer. Kellee’s willingness to be vulnerable helps people deal with the same stuff she went through. Her honesty isn’t just an emotional release; it’s a fundamental part of her calling. She recognized that her story “wasn’t going to be for me alone” because she felt it would be too “burdensome” to keep the good that God had done for her to herself. She is a vessel, speaking truth and offering “living proof” of transformation.
In this age of polished, filtered perfection, Kellee’s raw honesty is the definitive Trust X-Factor. It adds “weight and understanding” to her words that resonates far more powerfully than any ‘ivory tower’ approach.
My Takeaway for You: What are you holding back that could actually be your greatest asset? Revealing your humanity—your personal trauma and how you conquered it—doesn’t detract from your expertise; it gives you the authenticity that creates unstoppable trust.
Trading Sorrow for Clarity and Beauty
Kellee’s journey to becoming a devotional artist is anchored in her intensely personal sobriety journey. I wanted you to hear this because her story busts the myth that these struggles are only for people on the bottom rung. As Kellee shared, her family’s struggle was happening while they were building churches and businesses; they were a “poster family” who hid their sadness behind closed doors.
The Catalyst for Change: Getting Sick and Tired
Kellee reached a pivotal moment when she became “sick and tired of being sick and tired.” This determination, this sense of being “fed up and mad,” gave her the energy to change.
Instead of just focusing on quitting alcohol, Kellee strategically filled the void it left with spiritual focus. She said: “I had to have something fill all that time that I was sitting around in my own sorrow. And so I exchanged that (for) clarity and beauty.”
This is the blueprint, friend. This is where her faith and voice grew stronger. She walked by the powerful promise that “he who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.” (Roughly, Philippians 1:6)
Healing is Daily Victory
Now two years sober, Kellee is a walking testament to the fact that healing is a beautiful thing. It’s an active exchange of time and sorrow for spiritual clarity, moving from feeling “stripped naked” to being “loved and protected.” This profound shift is the essence of true, lasting change that applies to any area of your life or business.
The Power of the Pen: Writing as Prayer and Purpose
Kellee’s devotional writing literally started from “a hole in her heart” after her kids moved away. It began as a necessity, a daily practice to get her heart centered and aligned with God.
When I asked her about the moment she knew her writing was for others, she explained that she writes as a “conversation, my prayer to God.” It’s this intimate, honest outpouring that brings her truth, peace, hope, and prosperity, which she feels called to share.
The way she does this is amazing: she prays over every post, asking that the “right person” who needs to hear those words will read them that day. She calls the incredible feedback she gets, from people who call about Bitcoin, to a former colonel who reaches out, her “God winks.”
This is how you generate a powerful platform that transcends your niche. You put out a message with genuine intent.
The Target of the Message
Kellee’s ultimate prayer for her reader is that something is awakened in their spirit. That her words give them:
- Boldness to face their challenges.
- Hope for a better future.
- Security and Peace in their present state.
The Erosion of Shame: Becoming Scott Carley Again
Kellee’s willingness to discuss her personal trauma opened the door for me to share a deeply personal hot seat breakthrough of my own. I, personally, went through a divorce that I caused, and the healing journey was long.
I was defined by that event: I was “the divorced guy.” But the erosion of shame began when I shared that small, yet incredibly pivotal, moment of filling out a form. I instinctively checked “single” instead of “divorced.” I realized:
“I’m single. I’m not defined anymore by an event that happened five years ago… it represented some of the healing and some of the restoration of dignity, the erosion of shame out of me and coming back into, hey, I’m Scott Carley again. I’m not, ‘the divorced guy.’”
That is the ultimate goal of personal transformation: to let go of the past’s definition and step into your full potential. Kellee’s journey, and the unwavering support of her husband, Peter Strople, who “saw my pain, but he also saw my potential,” is the perfect complement to my own experience. You need people in your corner who believe in your future, not those who keep you tied to your past.
The Enduring Mantra: Grow, Never Stop Growing
The final question I posed to Kellee was about the one message she wants to leave with her audience in five years. Her answer is the perfect practical action step for all of us: “grow, never stop growing.”
Kellee is honest. She still has those days where she wants to stay in bed and thinks, “nah, what’s the bother?” (We all do, right?) Her counter-strategy is this powerful mindset: there is always “something to learn today that I can use for tomorrow.”
This is the hallmark of a resilient leader and a successful life strategy: the commitment to being a constant work in progress. Whether it’s through prayer, physical exercise, or simply getting your words out, the process of continuous personal and spiritual expansion is the Trust X-Factor that sustains long-term impact.
Unlock Your Trust X-Factor: It’s Time to Energize Your Life and Business
The lessons from my conversation with Kellee Strople are a powerful blueprint for any leader, coach, or consultant ready to move from “broken cookie inside” to a person of authentic power. The formula is clear: embrace transparency in leadership, pursue spiritual growth relentlessly, and define yourself by your immense potential, not your personal trauma.
